Pennsylvania has two major online paths with different outputs
For “PA criminal records online,” first decide whether you need a court case or a statewide criminal-history check. The Unified Judicial System (UJS) Web Portal provides public court case and docket information. Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) PATCH checks the PSP Central Repository for criminal-history information. Pennsylvania courts expressly warn that court case information should not be used in place of a criminal-history background check.

PATCH: understand the fee, scope, and “under review” status
PSP currently lists an individual criminal-history check at $22. It states that online requests are checked against Pennsylvania law-enforcement criminal-history records only, not federal records. A no-record response may be immediate, while a request that needs manual review can be marked “under review.” PSP says that status does not necessarily mean the person has a record, and its current service page says manual-review cases may take two to four weeks.
Do not treat “under review” as a hit
It is a processing status. Wait for the completed response before drawing a conclusion.
Volunteer checks are a separate free PATCH purpose
Pennsylvania State Police currently lists volunteer criminal-history checks as free. The volunteer form is specifically for a person acting as an unpaid volunteer and requires the volunteer’s agency or organization. PSP also states that volunteer checks cannot be notarized. Do not use the free volunteer option for an ordinary employment, tenant, personal, or other paid-purpose background check, and do not choose it when the recipient requires a notarized result.
Purpose matters
The fee waiver follows the volunteer purpose, not simply the requester’s preference for a free check. Standard individual checks remain a different product.
Use the UJS portal when you need the court docket
The UJS portal provides public docket sheets and case information across Pennsylvania court levels, including criminal Common Pleas and magisterial district matters. A docket can help you identify charges, filings, dates, and outcomes in a particular court case. It is still a court record, not a substitute for the statewide PSP background-check product.
Retrieve the final result rather than stopping at the search screen
For PATCH, keep the control number and request date because PSP uses them for status/result retrieval. For a court case, keep the court, docket number, party name, and the specific disposition or filing you need. When a receiving organization asks for a certified judgment or order, request that document from the court rather than sending an online docket printout unless the recipient says the docket is sufficient.

Know the special personal access-and-review route
PSP lists an “individual access and review” check separately from the ordinary PATCH request. The service page states that this product can only be requested by mail and currently costs $20. Use that route when the purpose is to inspect your own Pennsylvania criminal-history record for review rather than to order the standard public background-check product.
If information appears wrong, challenge the source that owns it
A court docket error should be raised with the court filing office that maintains the case. A problem in the PSP criminal-history repository belongs in the PSP access/review or challenge process. Keep copies of the completed response and the court disposition that supports the correction; mixing court and repository systems can delay resolution.
